A Report On Chinese To English Translation Of The Second Love Song In A Love Song For The Red Earth

This is a translation report on the second chapter of a Love Song of the Red Earth. This book is written by Professor Yang Zhenkun, the writer in Yunnan province. In this book, he introduces the beautiful natural scenery, local customs and the abundant resources. With beautiful words, Professor Yang shows the beauty of Yunnan province and his ardently love for his hometown.There already have been many books about Yunnan province being published previously, and most of them tend to introduce the general information of Yunnan. However, a Love Song for the Red Earth integrates knowledge with the elements of literature and of interest, which brings not only the knowledge of nature and humanities, but the literary esthetical appeal of the prose. A Love Song for the Red Earth consists of three love songs. The first love song is called that “there is a beautiful place”, which introduces us the natural scenery of Yunnan province. The second love song is “there is a miraculous place”, which mainly shows us the unique local customs. The third love song is “there is a fertile place”, which briefly introduces the abundant natural resources of Yunnan province. The present translation report, based on my practice of Chinese to English translation of the second love song in the book, explores the translation theory, its relevant strategies as well as skills that I have used in the translation.Because of the language feature in the prose of this book, and the characteristics of hypotaxis and parataxis in Chinese and English, I have many challenges to face and some serious obstacles to overcome during the translation process. In order to finish this task, I choose Eugine. A. Nida’s translation theory“functional equivalence” as guidance and to pursue the dynamic equivalence by combining the language features and the context. I try my best to avoid the translationese and foreigness in my translation, thus enabling the writer of the book and the target language readers to have a smooth written communication.
