On English Translation Of Culture-loaded Words In Bian Cheng From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

The most difficulty in translation does not lie in language itself, but in cultural connotation of language. Culture-loaded words contain cultural connotations of a specific nation, reflecting its thinking modes, values, local practices and traditional customs. Thus, the translation of culture-loaded words demands highly on translators, who not only master the cultural meaning of source language, but also transmit culture-loaded words to readers unmistakably. The author takes it as the start point of the thesis and further explores the translation of culture-loaded words based on the new-born translation theory—eco-translatology.There have been few researches on the translation of culture-loaded words from eco-translatology. To fill this gap, the author tries to discuss the translation of culture-loaded words guided by eco-translatology, taking two English versions of Bian Cheng—Yang Xianyi &Gladys Yang’s version and the American sinologist Jeffery C. Kinkley’s version as the study case. Starting from the eco-environment and the three dimensions of eco-translatology, the author mainly explores the following two aspects: the translation strategies and approaches to culture-loaded words and the three dimensional transformation of adaptive selection. The author holds that after considering different eco-environments Yang’s translation tends to employ foreignization while Kinkley’s version tends to use domestication; two translated texts successfully achieve the transformation from linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. But the translating approaches used in the two translated versions are different in each dimensional transformation.Eco-translatology provides translation study of culture-loaded words with a new and broader perspective; it implies that translators should fully consider cultural implication and communicative intention between source language and target language, as well as the implication in linguistic level. Furthermore, correct translation of culture-loaded words plays a significant role in spreading Chinese culture and in realizing the intercultural communication.
