Bian Cheng is the notable Chinese writer Shen Congwen's masterpiece, which is a typical Chinese country-flavor literature. With its vivid descriptions of country flavor and unique writing techniques, numerous readers have paid great attention to it since its publication in 1934.Though scholars at home and abroad have carried out much researches on Bian Cheng, few in-depth studies have been conducted on its translation. Therefore, this thesis attempts to make a systematic study of the translation strategies of the culture-loaded words in the two English versions of Bian Cheng from the perspective of domestication and foreignization. In this thesis, comparative studies are utilized to analyze the culture-loaded words in the two English versions of Bian Cheng. After studying the two English versions of Bian Cheng,I've drawn some inspirations.Between foreignization and domestication, there is no need to decide which is superior. The choice of these depends on translators' intentions, goals of translation, styles of texts and the acceptance level of target readers.Foreignization and domestication seem to be poles apart, but they are highly complementary to each other. When it comes to translation, the ultimate goal for a translator is to help his readers accept and understand a foreign culture.Generally speaking, when translating Bian Cheng,Yang preferred combining domestication with foreignization with some other translation methods;while Kinkley tended to employ foreignization strategy.
