This is a practice report on the whispering interpreting for the commencement ceremony of China Foreign Affairs University in 2015.This report covers every step of this interpreting practice from the early preparation, problems met during the process, analysis of the flaws in interpreting and a summary of lessons drawn from this practice. The main focus is to study typical flaws and figure out coping strategies correspondingly based on both established interpreting techniques and the specific scenarios the interpreter encountered then.Since most flaws can be attributed to wordiness or preceding redundancy against the time pressure in whispering interpreting, simplicity is a key goal in revising. To achieve this goal, the report analyzes each case in terms of its context, semantic correctness, language quality and delivery fluency. Moreover, for each flaw, the report explores its root causes from the perspectives of the interpreter’s language competence, translating proficiency and interpreting habits. Based on such study, these flaws are put into three categories, according to which remedies of compression, simplification and omission are adopted respectively. Under two of these categories, there are sub-groups set to address the flaws in a more targeted way. In addition to the remedy prescriptions, broader suggestions concerning capability building, interpreting approaches and interpreting habits are also offered aiming at tackling the weaknesses revealed by each flaw.Through such analysis, lessons learned here can help the interpreter make more effective efforts to deliver a better performance in the future.
