Since opening up to the outside world, the communication between China and other countries has been gradually deepened. As carriers of leaders’ thought, leaders’ works have become a main channel for foreigners to understand Chinese political culture. Therefore, the translation of the leaders’ works becomes more and more important. The selected works of Deng Xiaoping is one of the most important leaders’ works in China, it is translated by Bureau for the Complication and Translation and published by Foreign Language Press. To some extent, it represents highest level in translation circle of our country, so it is of great research value. In this paper, the author analyzes the application of semantic translation and communicative translation in the selected works of Deng Xiaoping(volume II) with Newmark’s text-type theory as an entry point. Newmark divides texts into three categories: expressive text, informative text and vocative text, based on which he proposes two translation methods, semantic translation and communicative translation. Semantic translation puts much emphasis on pragmatic analysis of words and sentence structures in original text, it attempts to keep the form of the original text. Communicative translation tries to deliver information in a way that conforms to target language at linguistic, cultural and pragmatic levels, the readability of the translation is highly emphasized. Besides, Newmark holds that semantic translation is used for expressive texts, communicative translation for informative and vocative texts. In the paper, from macro perspective, after analyzing intention of the text, intention of the translation purposes, target readers as well as authority of the text, the author concludes that in the C-E translation of the selected works of Deng Xiaoping(volume II), the translator should not only be faithful to the content of the original text, but also take target readers into consideration. Besides, based on the translation purposes, the main function of English version have become informative function. Then after a comparision of the original text and its English version, the author finds that communicative translation is the dominant translation method in the translation of the selected works of Deng Xiaoping(volume II), which accords with Newmark’s text type theory. Next from micro perspective, the author analyzes the application of communicative translation at lexical, syntactical and textual levels. Due to the differences between Chinese and English, the translator may appropriately add, delete or modify the original texts under the premise of fidelity. The goal is to enhance the readability of the English version, make it conform to language and culture habits of the target readers and fulfill communicative purpose.Under the ―go out strategy‖ of Chinese political culture, we still shoulder the mission of translating more leaders’ works. The author expects this research can provide some references for further studies on the English version of the selected works of Deng Xiaoping and make some contributions to the translation of the leaders’ works.
