The development of cultural resource and exploitation of cultural value via cultural industry are generally interpreted as the process from “cultural process” to “cultural capital”, then to “cultural product” and finally to “economic capital”. Therefore, “resource” is frequently recognized as the source of the whole industrial development process, on which the managers have always focused their attention. However, through observing the historical and modern cultural industry, it’s argued that the source of industrial development can be furthered to “cultural mode”. The so-called “cultural mode” means that in the process of socialization, a certain human behavior is gradually accepted by the group and solidified as the learnable behavioral mode, which is handed down from generation to generation and then solidified as the collective behavioral mode of a population; it’s also a kind of cultural resource which is convertible to cultural capital and exercises the control over other relevant cultural resources. A good many “cultural modes” have waxed and waned with social changes and in the course of history, some have subsided and some keep moving ahead; anyway, they are considered by the creators of modern operational culture industry as the previous or existing cultural resources and once confirmed and exploited by the creators, the cultural resource can be converted to cultural capital. In a similar way, once the “cultural mode” is successfully extracted by the creators, it can be directly converted to “cultural capital” as cultural resource. It’s even argued that whether the “resource” can be successfully converted to the “capital” depends on the existence and abolishment of “cultural mode”. In other words, the existence or absence of “cultural mode” determines whether the cultural resource can be smoothly converted to cultural capital. The paper is exactly aimed at revealing the logical rules, which is of great directive significance for the effective operation and management of cultural industry in modern times.
