This is an English-Chinese translation report on Understanding Multicultural Education by Professor Francisco Rios, and Christine Rogers Stanton, co-founders of the Social Justice Research Center. Professor Rios teaches at the Education College at the University of Wyoming. Christine Rogers Stanton is a scholar in the Department of Education in Montana State University.This report is based on two Chapters, “The Streets and Paths” and “The Wall” of the book. This book illustrates researches and concepts about multicultural education. The book is a professional work with strong satire, and enlightenment. It provides an excellent reference guide to understand the American education system and significance for education in China. It provides practical value. By translating books and works on education we can understand the historical importance of educational background in other countries and help evaluate the present situation. Thus we can learn their advantages.“Functional equivalence” is to create a standard in conversion between source language and target language. This thesis attempts to analyze the application of“functional equivalence” in education text. It deepens the understanding of functional equivalence theory with the guidance of Lexical equivalence, sentence equivalence,passage equivalence and style equivalence, and analysis the problems during translation.It also improves the quality of translation by translating the book.The report consists of five parts. The first part is a brief introduction of the translation project, including the brief introduction of the author, the analysis of the original text and the meaning of the project.The second part is the description oftranslation project, including the pre-translation work, the process of translation project and the revision. The third part describes the functional equivalence theory of Eugene Nida. The forth part is case analysis. And The fifth part is conclusion, including some problems, solutions and lessons in the process of translation.
