Interpersonal Function Analysis Of Popular Scientific Writings In Discover

The quantitative and qualitative methods are applied to analyze the data in this study. This study aims at analyzing the interpersonal function of the language in the data, and also the realization of the interpersonal function by mood system, modality system. The study also deepens into the words, sentences and grammar level, which reflect interpersonal function respectively. The findings:(1) There are many sentences in the popular scientific reading Discover are declaratives, which are used to convey information.(2) Low value modal auxiliaries are widely used in the popular scientific writing Discover in that the writer expecting to transfer his responsibility while he provides information, and it also makes it is easy to take because the expression is euphemistic.(3) The first pronouns are used in large amount, which means the writer makes it clear who is the object of the communication with the readers. It also makes the communicative process more dynamic.(4) Simple present tense and simple past tense are the main tenses used in popular scientific writing Discover. They are used by the writer to convey information objectively. Passive voice is the main voice in Discover, it is used to soften the speaking mood and to transfer the responsibility to protect the agent, and also it draws the reader?s attention to the content rather than the agent.According to the study on the characteristics of the realization ways of interpersonal function in popular scientific discourse, it turns out that in order to make the writing easy to understand for most of the people, the writer of popular scientific writing should make the language be clear, concise, accurate and concrete.
