The Study Of Weird News E-C Transediting Approaches From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Weird news is based on anecdotes all over the world to make the mass feel relax in the face of enormous pressure. With the quickening pace of globalization and informationization, Chinese readers show an increasing demand for weird news. Due to various factors they can not read English weird news directly, and have to seek the help of transediting. Consequently, the study of weird news E-C transediting is of great significance. Relevance theory is a linguistic theory about communication and cognition put forward by Sperber and Wilson, and its strong explanatory power has exerted important influence on the translation field. Gutt first proposed Relevance Theory on Translation under which translation is an interlingual ostensive-inferential interpretation activity which involves dynamic reasoning according to a dynamic context, and reasoning is based on relevance. Based on E-C transediting manuscripts from Weird News Channel on Huanqiu.com, the author finds that problems including mistranslation, improper structure and lack of interest encountered in transediting process have seriously affected final transediting effects and brought difficulties to accurately convey information. To solve these problems, this paper starts from the introduction of characteristics of weird news and analyzes differences between English news and Chinese news from discourse and cultural aspects respectively. Then under the guidance of Relevance Theory the author seeks weird news transediting approaches from the perspective of text relevance and readers relevance. Optimal text relevance is illustrated by discourse relevance and context relevance, while optimal readers relevance mainly covers cultural relevance and thinking relevance. The author hopes results of this study can provide useful references for weird news translation practice and make a moderate contribution to the translation field.
