Along with China’s rapid economic development, expanding globalization and booming international communication, more and more foreigners want to know the details of China. At the same time, China is expecting to introduce herself to other countries and regions all over the world in every aspect to win their understanding. In the era of information, news, as carrier of both information and culture, has greatly helped to make China better known by the world. The effects of publicity basically depend on the quality of news translation. Transediting, which is widely used in news translation, is an important method of present translation and plays a significant role in news translation. At present, there are not many researches on Chinese-English news transediting and most of these researches focus on the specific transediting principles and methods. Besides, the researches on the process of Chinese-English news transediting may not be very systematic and comprehensive. Therefore, it is of great significance to study Chinese-English news transediting. The present study aims to probe into Chinese-English news transediting from the perspective of adaptation theory proposed by Jef Verschueren, which has rarely been touched upon before by scholars and experts. According to adaptation theory, variability, negotiability and adaptability are the three properties of language. In addition, language use is a continuous process of choice-making and adaptation. Actually transediting can also be seen as a process of continuous choice-making and adaptation. Adaptation theory can be applied to transediting. Chinese-English news transediting is a special cross-cultural communicative activity, thus translators need to take target readers’cognitive, cultural and other differences into consideration to make various appropriate choices and adaptations. This present study firstly makes a review of previous studies on this translation branch, and then gives a general description of the basics of adaptation theory. After exploring the applicability of adaptation theory to this research on Chinese-English news transediting, it gives a general overview of Chinese-English news transedting, including the features of Chinese-English news texts, the definition of transediting, the necessity of transediting in Chinese-English news translation, and key factors that affect Chinese-English news transediting. And then the thesis probes into the specific aspects the translator has to make adaptations to and some transediting methods to achieve these adaptations on the basis of the analysis of the examples chosen from both Chinese and English versions of Beijing Review, a well-known periodical in the field of China’s international communication. Finally, this thesis tries to reveal from the present study that Chinese-English news transediting is essentially a continuous choice-making and adaptation process. The translator has to make adaptation to linguistic context including cohesion and sequencing as well as to communicative context including target reader’s mental, social and physical worlds. During this process, the translator can adopt some transediting methods, such as division, combination, deletion, addition, rewriting and reorganization. To sum up, the purpose of this thesis is to make a tentative study on applying adaptation theory to analyze Chinese-English news transediting, which not only tries to broaden the applicable scope of adaptation theory but also strives to provide a different perspective for the studies on news transediting.
