After participating in many international events as a volunteer interpreter, the author has realized she had many serious cohesion problems in the process of Chinese to English consecutive interpreting, making it hard for the listeners to understand. The author hereby generates the idea of exploring whether cohesion problems in the process of C-E consecutive interpreting are common among MTI students of Xi’an International Studies University(XISU). To find out whether cohesion problems in the process of interpreting are widespread among MTI students in XISU, what are the major problems and the causes of these problems, this paper takes 24 MTI students(Class One and Class Two) as the subjects, adopts an empirical study of an experiment and an interview to collect relevant data, and then gives an elaborate analysis on the data so as to arouse MTI students’ attention to the importance of textual cohesion in the process of interpreting. Meanwhile, because the two classes are under different curriculums, the author also attempts to find out whether MTI students of different directions(MI, MT&I) will display any difference in textual cohesion, and that is why contrast is set between the two groups. The result of the experiment shows that MTI students of XISU do have serious cohesive problems universally, and the main causes are lack of knowledge about cohesion theory and relevant guidance and training; Class Two have a better textual cohesive ability than Class One in interpreting.
