A Study Of Textual Cohesion In English And Chinese Alternative Interpreting

In the process of the Consecutive Interpreting, discourse cohesion is very important, which has a huge impact on the audience to receive information. If the interpreter could produce discourse cohesion well, the audience would understand the meaning better. On the contrary, if the text lacked cohesion, there would be obstacles for understanding, thus, influencing the effective reception of information.This thesis examined the joint press conference of Hu Jintao and Obama, observe the discourse cohesion. Resorting to the question session of the reporters for Obama. Analyzing professional interpretation to observe problems in the discourse cohesion, finally putting forward some solutions. The main contents of the first Chapter are the conception of discourse cohesion and the features of Consecutive Interpreting.This Chapter provides the objective judgment for discourse cohesion. In Chapter Two, the author analyzed three reasons which can cause discourse cohesion problems: the difference between languages, the difference between thoughts and cultures, and the pressure of time and note-taking. Besides, there are also some problems caused by these three reasons. Chapter Three aims at solve the problems in Chapter Two. According to the problems, the cohesive methods include: adding conjunctions, transformation of thought, omitting redundant information and so on. The goal of this thesis is to improve the quality of interpretation and contribute to the study of discourse cohesion in Consecutive Interpreting.
