A Report On The Translation Of Redeployment (Excerpts)

Redeployment, a collection of short stories, is the virgin book-length publication of American author, Phil Klay. It has achieved great success upon its publication by the Penguin Press in 2014. As a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Phil Klay who has been to Iraq in-person not only renders a true picture of the front line of the war with language filled with delicacy and cruelty, but also depicts insightfully the inner struggle of the marines. Currently, there is no published Chinese translation for this book.This translation practice report consists of translation practice and translation report. The translation practice refers to a translation of three short stories chosen from Redeployment. Under the guidance of Adaptation Theory, Text Typology, “Communicative Translation and Semantic Translation”, the translation practice adopts some translation techniques, such as contextual analysis, amplification and concretization. Based on the analysis of the linguistic features of the source text and the characteristics of military English, the translator summarizes and makes an analysis of the difficulties encountered in the process of the translation practice.Based on the analysis of the source text and the target text, it has been found that in military context, native English speakers tend to use various military terms, abbreviations and colloquial expressions, which puts forward a high demand on the translator. It is necessary for the translator to make careful contextual analysis and background research, and the technique of amplification can be adopted under proper circumstances. Moreover, given the distinctions in Chinese and English language features and social backgrounds, while making linguistic choices, adaptation shall be made to produce a smoother translation. It is hoped that the findings of this report shall be of referential significance to future military English translation.
