With the rise of five-character poems in Wei-Jin Period of China, antithesis as a rhetoric figure, gained the increasing attention by literati and used in their poetry composing. During the Qi and Liang Dynasties, another rhetorical device named couplet in five-character poems gradually moved towards maturity. Specifically, artistic were increasingly skilled, with more varieties, and also tended to be used in a fixed position. The thesis mainly studied in classification of the couplet in five-character poems during the Wei Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties period and discussed the position change of the couplet as well as its influence on the rule forming of antithesis in Tang Dynasty.The paper contained four chapters. Chapter one was a general introduction, which mainly overviewed the previous theory in terms of the view of nature、development path、principles of creation and types of antithetical couplet; In chapter two, one author was screened as a representative from each dynasty and analyzed the couplet in five-character poems. Through this process, acquainted the achieved development of couplet in five-character poems during all periods in terms of artistic expression; Chapter three was divided into five parts, statistically analyzed the couplet application phenomenon in five-character poems during different periods respectively. It was discovered that, from Wei to Chen Density, couplets were increasingly applied in five-character poems, with couplets were tended to be concentrated in the middle positions. The fourth chapter, started from the antithesis requirement in verses, analyzed the application of couplet in five-character poems tended to regularization in their development process during the Period of Wei, Jin and Southern and Northern Dynasties. Discussions were mainly from two aspects, the own development of couplets(such as increased in the number and types, matured in skills) and their standardized use in poetry(like tends in fixed position and standardized rhyme usage).By observing the development process of couplet location from free to fixed position, and the combining process of couplet and sound pattern theory, it could be ascertained that the requirements of metrical verses on sound pattern and the antithesis were not by accident.It can be inferred that, the application of antithesis art in five-character poems developed rapidly in Southern and Northern Dynasties, kept the steps toward the regularization and played a significant impetus in the formation of the metrical verses.
