This thesis is a translation report on the translation of Adoption of Geodemographic and Ethno-cultural Taxonomies for Analysing Big Data, co-written by Richard James Webber(from King’s College London, one of the global top 20 universities) and other two authors. The source material was published on the Big Data & Society in May 2015. The content of the paper is about Big Data information technology, one of the hot topics in today’s world. It aims at examining the reasons for the uneven adoption of two new forms of generic classification, namely, the geodemographic or postcode-based classifications and the ethno-cultural classification.China is vigorously advocating and implementing the development of "Internet +", while Big Data is the main support of this strategy. As Big Data analysis research and application is now in its early stages of development, the domestic researchers need a quick access to the leading edge of this field worldwide. Moreover, the research into Big Data has great significance to the development of Big Data industry in Guiyang as well as to that of the whole country. Besides, I’m confident for the translation task of this paper with my great effort. To sum up, translating this paper is not only necessary but also practicable. However, due to the complexity of the background knowledge and sentence structures involved in this paper, the translation process of it is quite a struggle. The final version of the translated text has gone through several drafts with careful review and cross-checking. Throughout the translation process, I realized that even the communicative translation theory was chosen as the guiding theory for this translation task, it does not necessarily mean that this theory is the sole guiding theory for the translation. In other words, the integrated use of other translation theories as well as the related strategies is the best policy. This translation report is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction of the background of this project. The second part is the introduction of the translation theory used in this task, analysis of the original paper, and the connection of theory and practice. The third part is the detailed exemplification of theory with examples. It mainly refers to the key and difficult points in the translation, and translation strategies to them. The forth part is the summary of this project. The reflection over the translated text and the translation theory used in this task, as well as gains and losses are included in this part.
