The current complicated situation of public order and the increasingly onerous security work make a new higher demand on the psychological ability of police. A lot of researches on the police’s mental health have been done before. Research in recent years mainly focused on the psychological quality of the police. Psychological ability of the police is the comprehensive embodiment of their psychological quality, and is also the key standard to examine whether their psychological quality is qualified or not. Police’s psychological ability is an important factor that not only determines his level of law enforcement, but also affects his work performance. More importantly, the main factor that influences the police’s level of law enforcement is also psychological ability. This means that the level of psychological ability directly affects the level of law enforcement as well as work performance. Therefore, in order to improve the ability of law enforcement and work performance, a mental ability assessment tool is needed to assess the mental ability of police and at last achieve the goal of strengthening the construction of the police force. The purpose of this study is to understand the structural model of police’s psychological ability, and explore its influence on work performance. This research helps to deepen the understanding of the condition of police’s psychological ability.Based on the questionnaire that was specifically made on the psychological ability of the police, this research proceeds from reality, and explores the relationship among theinfluences of each dimension of the police’s psychological ability on their work performance, and then analyses the relationship between the police’s psychological ability and their work performance. The following are the results of the research:Research 1: This research collected 1301 data, among which 588 were analyzed with exploratory factor analysis, while the other 713 with confirmatory factor analysis. The result of the exploratory factor analysis shows that the scale includes these five dimensions of confidence, firmness, responsibility, justice and appreciation, which is identical with theoretical concept. With this method, five factors with eigen value greater than 1 are selected, and a total of 30 questions are listed. The analysis shows that the explained variation is 59.10%, and internal consistency reliability Cronbach ɑcoefficient is 0.915, and Cronbach ɑ coefficient of each dimension is 0.709-0.849, and the relevancy among all the dimensions is 0.660-0.820, which indicates that the scale is well-structured. The result of the confirmatory factor analysis shows that the CFI of the scale is 0.915, TLI, 0.905, SRMR, 0.43, RMSEA, 0.52. From the perspective of the fit index of each item, most of the indexes of this model are acceptable, which is basically matched.Research 2: The analysis of the current conditions of police’s psychological ability shows that there is no gender and age difference in both the dimensions and the scores among this particular group of police.. According to the evaluation scores and standard deviation of all the dimensions, the dimension of confidence got the highest score with the average score of 30.96; while the dimension of appreciation got the lowest, which was 11.51. There was little difference between the dimensions of firmness and responsibility, so did that of justice and appreciation, which were all around 11.Therefore, the average scores of three dimensions all fell between 20 and 30, and that of the other two dimensions were less than 20. This illustrates that this group of subjects possessed the three capabilities ahead, especially confidence, which got a relatively higher score and showed a relatively prominent performance.Research 3: This research studies the influence that police’s psychological abilityexerted on their work performance. As the result shows, mental ability is significantly correlated with work performance, and the correlation coefficients of psychological ability in task performance and contextual performance were 0.763 and 0.796 respectively, which also were significant correlation. After that, a regressive analysis was made to the five dimensions for work performance. And five dimensions were included in the regression equation: confidence, firmness, responsibility, justice and appreciation. In the fifth step wise regression, we found that confidence, with the standardized β of 0.501, made most contribution to the work performance, followed by firmness and responsibility, whose standardized regression coefficients were 0.284 and0.159 respectively.
