The source material of this translation project is Translation Changes Everything: Theory and Practice,a collection of essays published in 2013 by American Italian scholar Lawrence Venuti. This report is based on Chapter Two: “The Difference That Translation Makes”,which focuses on the unconsciousness of the translator in translation, the irreducible differences in translation, language reminder, unintended sound effects and the political unconsciousness. This collection of essays is an academic monograph.According to Newmark's classification of text types, this is an informative text, which is featured by formality, objectivity and logicality. Therefore, the functional equivalence theory is chosen to guide the translation practice;during the translation process,Newmark's communicative translation strategy is used as the main translation strategy, with the semantic translation as supplemental. In terms of translation methods, different translation methods, such as,conversion of part of speech, extension of word meaning, conversion of voice, cultural annotation are used at lexical, syntactic, cultural and discourse levels so as to convey the source-language message as accurate as possible.Through the translation materials, the translator realizes the importance of translation theory to translation practice, and also fills up the translation deficiencies. This translation practice further deepens the understanding of the basic quality of a professional translator and lays a foundation for future translation practice.
