This paper is a report on the translation of an excerpt of the second chapter,“A Philosophical School for our Time:Thinking with Plato after Dewey”(hereinafter referred to as “A Philosophical School for our Time”)of the book—Schools in Transition. The excerpt makes detailed comparison and analysis on the educational theories of Plato and Dewey, and explicates the significance of the educational theories in Plato's The Republic on the evolution of contemporary schools.Under the theories such as communicative translation theory and functional equivalence theory, etc.,this report employed various translation techniques including paraphrase, division, conversion and recasting so as to address the difficulties in the lexical level(terminology, unusual collocation, etc.),syntactical level(long and complex sentences)and rhetorical aspect(defamiliarization and metaphor). The translator hopes that this report will give some inspiration to the translation of similar texts, help the Chinese readers understand the educational theories, and provide new perspective for the education researchers on the evolution of schools, and guide the educational policy makers.
