With the development of the metallurgical industry and the process of globalization,China, as a metallurgical industry giant, is having an increasingly frequent communication with the rest of the world. To develop China’s national metallurgical industry, excellent translations of metal materials engineering are essential. In this regard, appropriate translation methods and skills as well as relevant translation theories helpfully to complete the translation task can not be ignored. Based on the English-Chinese translation of metal materials engineering text, this translation report aims to probe into some of those items. From the perspective of functional linguistics, the purpose of metal materials engineering text is to convey information to the target readers. The most important part of the metal materials engineering English-Chinese translation is to convey information accurately. In order to achieve this goal, Nida’s functional equivalence theory is used as a guiding principle. There are two kinds of equivalence between the source language text and the target language text, namely, the equivalence of meaning and the equivalence of style. Nida’s functional equivalence theory focuses on the feeling of the target language text readers. This thesis applies Nida’s functional equivalence theory into the metal materials engineering translations. This translation practice report took Metals Engineering-A Technical Guide as the research object, and the translated text was selected from the first two chapters. Firstly, this thesis gives a brief introduction to the source text, introducing the preparation before translation, translation process and the proofreading after translation. Secondly, this thesis analyses the source text from three different levels-- the lexical level, the syntactic level and the discourse level to reveal the respective features and uses some translation methods and skills, such as free translation and literal translation, omission method and inversion method are applied to translate under the guidance of the Nida’s Theory of Functional Equivalence. At last, the thesis sums up the major findings, limitations, and the prospect for future studies.
