In recent years,China has gradually developed into one of the most competitive hydropower superpowers in the world.Chinese hydropower companies have expanded their business across the world,occupying more than 70% of the overseas hydropower markets.And with the help of the One "Belt and One Road" initiative,China's hydropower internationalization will be further accelerated.Therefore,translation of hydropower engineering English has gradually become an emerging field of translation research,and the uniqueness of hydropower engineering English also results in the particularity of its translation strategy choice.Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory,as a guiding theory for translation strategy,has a profound impact on the translation studies in China and even in the world.It has been widely applied in the translation of various texts such as tourism,journalism,advertising,law,science and technology,etc.This thesis attempts to study the application of functional equivalence theory in the translation of hydropower engineering English.The author proposes to adopt literature search method and qualitative method in the study,and a sufficient number of representative samples are extracted for case study by reviewing and exploring the English literature,specifications,and reports of hydropower engineering.Based on the analysis on the characteristics of hydropower engineering English at the lexical,syntactic and textual levels,the author uses functional equivalence theory to analyze and illustrate the use of translation strategies and methods in translating hydropower engineering English at the above three levels,and discusses the guiding role that functional equivalence theory plays in the translation of hydropower engineering English through such methods as literal translation,free translation,conversion translation,omission translation,linear translation,reverse translation,splitting translation,comprehensive translation,and contextual context methods.This study shows that functional equivalence theory is an effective translation standard for English-Chinese translation practice of hydropower engineering texts.The application of functional equivalence theory in guiding the E-C translation of hydropower engineering texts can help improve the translation quality,which can make the translation more coherent and easier for the target readers to accept.
