As more and more foreigners come to China, Bilingual public signs in tourist attractions play an important role in the way to bring convenience for them. Bilingual public signs are the windows to spread our culture, they play the role of bridge during the foreigners come and know China deeply. Because the culture differences between Chinese and Western, the translation of public signs in tourist attractions is of great significance.This thesis, focusing on public signs in tourist attractions, aims at drawing moreattention to the Functionalism. Every action has an aim, a purpose, or Skopos, which isalso the guiding principle of functionalist translation and determines the translationstrategies. And one of the most important factors that determine a translation purpose is theaddressee—the intended receiver or audience in the target language, with expectations andcommunicative needs. Therefore, in the translation of public signs in tourist attractions we must first make cleartheir functions and intended addressees.As people pay more attention to the public signs in tourist attractions, their translation in every tourist attractions become better and better. No matter what the tourist signs are, they are all translated from the Skopos Theory. The author gathered many tourist signs from many tourist attractions around our country and make a study on them, directed by Skopos Theory, provide some Chinese-English translation strategies and suggestions. The key part of the article is about the strategies of borrowing,transliteration, reversion, addition and omission. The author starting from the target audience suggests that all the translations should use the polite words as possible as they can. And the author strongly recommendssetting up a corpus of tourism signs.This thesis pays more attention to the strategies from the Skopos Theory, especially the need of the target audience. The main structure of the article is begin from the others’ experience, found the questions, making a study on them and solves the question according the Skopos Theoy.All in all, the present status of the translation of public signs in tourist attractions is far from being perfect andmore attention should be paid to it. Only when translation of public signs achieves theintended purpose can we say our translation is successful.
