With the continuous improvement of the medical education in mainland China in recent years, the medical science, especially the western medicine in China has made rapid progress. At the same time, the writing and publishing quality of medical textbooks have changed for the better day by day. With the development of the programs for international students in our Chinese medical colleges and universities, these high quality textbooks needed to be translated into English to meet the needs of the increasing foreign students each year. What’s more, the translation of Chinese medical textbooks should not to be delayed in order to meet the increasing demands of communication with foreign peers. This report is mainly based on the translation of the text from Section 4 to Section6, Chapter One, Experimental Functional Science a Course Book(Second Edition). It contains 10, 269 words. The author mainly discussed the following two questions within this report: one is the characteristics of Chinese and English medical textbooks, especially the English one; another is to apply the conversion skills to the translation of medical textbooks to ensure the veracity of the translation. This report includes project introduction, preparatory work of translation, target text analysis, case analysis as well as the deficiencies and problems during the translation of this project. In case analysis, the author mainly discussed 7 concrete cases from the text under the Reiss’ s Text Typology. The author set emphasis on the apply of translation shift theory to the translation of Chinese medical textbooks, including the shift of words, shift of voices and the shift of word order. This report argues that the translator of medical textbooks should strictly follows the rule of veracity, and the translator should fulfill the translation tasks based on the well understanding of source text as well as the rational use of translation skills.
