Cultural exchanges between China and the west have been gradually improved under the current situation, expanding from daily life to spiritual level. As one necessary part of the exchanges, the development of art design in China is to a great extent under the impact of foreign advanced theories and excellent art works on it, therefore its translation, as a mediator to interact with and convey culture in the process of cross cultural exchanges, has been paid conspicuously more attention to. In this instance, BRANDING ELEMENT LOGOS 2, an art design textbook, is chosen as the translation text, aiming to inspire students’ mindset, to expand students’ vision and to improve students’ art design level.According to language function, Newmark defined three typologies of text, namely informative text, expressive text and vocative text and put forward two strategies, communicative translation and semantic translation on the basis of their different features.Translators should use different kinds of translation methods and skills to make translation text more suitable for target language readers by the guidance of these two strategies.Taking Newmark’s text typology theory as guiding principle, the source text is defined as informative text taken from a textbook for art design majors. During the translation process, the translator held the principle that communicative translation occupies dominant role while semantic translation a subsidiary role. Translation methods chosen include literal translation, free translation, transliteration and zero translation.Translation skills are also applied such as addition, omission and conversion, in order to make the translation of art design professional words and sentences in the source text much closer to art design text features. Thus, translation text would be easier for art design majors to understand and accept.
