After Kim Jong-un in office, the DPRK has undergone several changes, and theObama Administration has tried different measures to persuade the DPRK to give upits nuclear weapons program. This paper is an attempt to analyze the U.S.-DPRK relations after Kim Jong-un.It is necessary to have such a research, because it could help us have a betterunderstanding of the U.S.-DPRK relations with some light on the DPRK’s futuremoves and the possible adjustment in the policy of the United States toward theDPRK in the future. In this paper, the writer analyzes the U.S.-DPRK relations through a review ofrelevant key events and a study of the interests of each side, as well as the factorsaffecting the relations. The research concludes that although the U.S.-DPRK relations after KimJong-un have gone through twists and turns, the relations remain relatively stable. The crises are caused by the rocket launches and nuclear test conducted by theDPRK, and the joint military exercises by the United States and the ROK. TheUnited States prefers to keep the status quo on the Korean Peninsula, because adivided Korean Peninsula is of the best interest to the United States. It could not onlystrengthen the U.S-ROK alliance, but also give the U.S. an excuse for its presence inNortheast Asia. In the future, denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula will continueto be the goal of the United States. But currently the U.S.-DPRK relations remainrelatively stable.
