The Chinese nation has been faced with unprecedented culture challenge andracial crisis ever since the Opium War which marked the beginning of modern China.Standing at the crossroad of history and concerning the historical question” whereChina should go and approach”, Chinese ideological realm becomes varied. Thisreflects in aspects as bitterly exploring ways to save the country and the people, andseek the way to modernization.Liberalism, as the mainstream of western society, hasa pretty long history and has been the main and significant ideological theory of thedevelopment of modern culture in modern capital countries, and also, it has been oneof the basic trends of thought in modern civilization. Ever since its introduction,liberalism has exerted key influence on China’s society. There exists an inseparablelink between Liberalism and Marxism. Liberalism, stemming from modern China hasits source back to the West as Marxism. And both of them have significant influenceon the development of China’s society. In the West, liberalism has the same root asMarxism and the value orientation is almost the same. In recent years, scholars in ourcountry have made great achievement in researching modern China’s liberalism.Marxism has been the guiding ideology of our country, and its academic theory hasbeen developing and innovating. But, research concerning the contradictory andinteractive between modern China’s liberalism and Marxism is still at the startingstage. Related researches are much less and there is a lack in through and systematicresearches. In this paper, a literary review will be given on Marxism and modernChina’s liberalism and the author’s opinion will be brought about on the connotationof the two thoughts. The history of the development of Marxism is not absorbed as acritique of its antithesis of liberal theory. And the history of the development ofMarxism is not comprehensive and is not in line with the actual process of ModernHistory. The debate between Socialism and Liberalism which is, if not, viewed fromthe perspective of the contradictory and interactive of Marxism and Liberalism willhave deviation of theory and practice. Consequently, the establishment of adialectical position and attitude of the relationship between modern China’s Marxism and Liberalism is of great theoretical significance to the development of Marxisttheory, the development of the practice and theory of socialism with Chinesecharacteristics, and a correct understanding of substance, questions and developmenttrend of the twentieth century and Socialism and Liberalism.
