In the western history of civic education, a number of outstanding thinkers appeared who had embarked on practical considerations to enrich and develop the theory of citizen education and carried on the practice and innovation, providing a rich theoretical foundation and practical basis for the development of citizenship education. While Kerschensteiner represented as a thinker of civic education, who was ignored in the long course of historical development. Under current conditions, the citizen education increasingly consider by the whole society. Studying the ideological and civic education of Kerschensteiner and absorbing the essence of his thought still has realistic theory meaning and realistic significance for guiding the civil education in China.Kerschensteiner lived in Germany when it was during the rise of capitalism, whose rich life experience laid a foundation for the formation of the thought. At the same time he learned from Pestalozzi and Dewey, put forward a theory of civic education and labor education. His thought is rich. The system of thought is quite complete, which covers the concept of civic education, the objective and task of civic education and the content of civic education. He also proposed the labor school provides better practice facility for this great cause further development of civic education. This is the wisdom of Kerschensteiner.Due to the limitations of age and his class constraints, his education thought embodies the characteristics of nationalism. But it can never cover up the importance of civic education thought in modern society. Nowadays we pay more attention to the citizenship education and actively absorb his thought. Combined with the current situation and in order to further improve the effectiveness of citizenship education in our country, the citizen education in our country requires defining the goals of civic education, enriching civic education content and innovating form of civic education.
