This paper systematically elaborated the meaning, contents and research statusof citizenship education at first. Then the author sorted out the phases of historicaldevelopment of citizenship education. In addition to this, the paper analyzed thecharacteristic, and then introduced the main way of its implementation.Throughout the history of citizenship education in Britain, we can find thatpolitical tradition has deep impact on it. Firstly, the British political system containsthe democracy itself, and this democracy can promote the implementation anddevelopment of citizenship education. Second, the two main British political thought——liberalism and conservatism also has direct or indirect impact on citizenshipeducation. Besides these, the paper also analyzed the history of two major partiesand its influence to the citizenship education.Britain has established the modern state very early, and the citizenship has aclosely link with the establishment of modern state. Therefore, the third part of thepaper has study the relationship of them. Starting from the political tradition how toinfluence the establishment of modern state, the paper also study the reason whymodern country construction need citizenship education and the function of it.Although the citizenship education attaches great importance after1980s inBritain, and it has some education reform according to the “Crick Report”, there arestill some problems in implementation process. Finally, through these analysis tracedback to the root, we can find something we can learn from British citizenshipeducation.
