During the period of economy transition and social structure adjustment in Chinasociety, rural remaining wives are growing in rural areas, faced more and moreproblems, in which rural remaining wives’ participation in villagers’ self-governmentin rural development is a new topic. This paper makes a tentative research about ruralremaining wives’ participation in villagers’ self-government from the angle of socialcapital theory, finding the influence factors and resolving problems. The research hascertain theoretical and realistic significance.The paper discusses the psychological and behavioral problems of rural remainingwives and their social capital structure from Shan Wang township in west of Anhuiprovince and reasons which affect their participation in village self-government fromthe micro, middle and macro level, with questionnaire, interview and case study,trying to find the best model which can solve the problems. The paper puts forwardconcrete measures for promoting rural remaining wives to participate in villagers’self-government from the angle of social capital. The paper concludes the followingconclusions:(1)There are some psychological and behavioral problems about rural remainingwives’ participation in village self-government, existing in the countryside. Ruralremaining wives’ participation is not high, form more than content. In the villagecommittee election, rural remaining husbands replace remaining wives on voting. Inaddition, remaining wives who have had the outdoor-workers experience prefer toparticipate in villagers’ self-government than no outdoor-workers experience, so weshould encourage elite remaining wives to participate in villagers’ self-government.(2) Cultural degree, family and individual economic income, social networks andpolitical status are the micro social capital which affects remaining wives’participation in villagers’ self-government. Administrative villages and ruralcommunity organization development also influence remaining wives’ participationin village self-government. Among them, the administrative village of history, politics, culture and other comprehensive resource and the women’s organizations in ruralinfluence remaining wives to participate in villagers’ self-government. As macrosocial capital, the rural traditional gender culture and rural economic level and villagecommittee election system influence rural remaining wives to participate in villagers’self-government.(3) Microcosmic social capital should searches to medium and macroscopiccapital, which is the best capital operating mode to achieve rural remaining wives toparticipate in villagers’ autonomy of, are realization.This paper is an empirical study based on the social theories, it is innovative interms of its perspective and approaches, which can serves as guidance for futureresearches.
