The Strait of Malacca is one of the world’s main strategic shipping channels, the security of which has received an increased attention internationally. Even if a set of international laws safeguarding the peace of Malacca has been established through joint effort of states using or governing the strait and international organizations, safety of Malacca Strait is still an issue within the current international legal framework. In combination with an analysis of its waterway maintenance and piracy problem, this thesis is an attempt in solving the problem from the perspective of international law.The thesis is divided into three chapters:Chapter one introduces the general safety issues of the Strait of Malacca. Its history, geographical importance and strategic value are the main reasons causing its security problems. Waterway maintenance and piracy problem are leading in current safety problems of Malacca Strait.Chapter two analyzes the security issues of Malacca Strait from the perspective of international law. Within the framework of international laws, there still in need of a legal system securing the peace of the Strait of Malacca intensely and comprehensively, with specific provisions set separately in United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982, The Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation of 1988 and About the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia of 2004. Regulating waterway maintenance and its piracy problem through international law is what must be spared in the spotlight in peacekeeping of Malacca Strait. After analyzing the difficulties in law when applying related rules of international law to the above problems.Chapter three is an analysis of the approach of international law in safeguarding the security of Malacca Strait. According to the security status quo of the Strait, based on international law, the author proposes approaches to maintaining the peace of Malacca with their reasonability being considered.
