The Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee proposed the strategic plan of comprehensively deepening reforms. It marks China’s reform has entered a deep-water district and social construction has entered a crucial stage. Currently, the features of transition in China are increasingly obvious. Social life and social structure are undergoing profound changes and people’s pursuit of interests, lifestyle and values show significant differences. With the rapid economic development, social contradictions are increasing, diverse and complex, which have a negative impact on social harmony and stability. So resolving social contradictions becomes an important issue of social management. As an important thought method, ideological and political education plays an effective role in resolving social contradictions. In the process to resolve social contradictions, the general methods pay more attention to handling than adjusting the contradictions, more educating than easing people’s emotions, more opposition than communication, more single method than comprehensive approach. Researches on the functions of ideological and political education tend to be flaky. So we need more researches on the issue. Currently transferred from a theoretical perspective, the methods to resolve social contradictions are very traditional, such as guidance, but focusing on new methods such as psychological counseling is not enough. From a practical perspective, in the process of using ideological and political education to resolve social contradictions, people’s dominant position is not prominent and many effective methods are not used, which directly affect the results of resolving social contradictions. Based on the overview of the social contradictions of the transition, this paper analyzes the functions of ideological and political education in resolving social contradictions, especially focuses on the ideological and political education path to resolve social contradictions. The article is divided into three parts:The first part, a basic overview of social contradictions in transition. This part describes the basic performance of social contradictions in transition, summarizes the new features of social contradictions and analyzes the main reasons contradictions generated.The second part, ideological and political education is an effective way to resolve social contradictions. This part discusses that resolving contradictions need ideological and political education in two ways. On one hand, valuable experiences accumulated from practice provide a useful reference to resolve contradictions. On the other hand, the characteristics of social contradictions in transition determine resolving contradictions is inseparable from the participation of ideological and political education. Then the part analyzes the functions of ideological and political education in resolving social contradictions.The last part, the way of ideological and political education to resolve social contradictions. There are both the inheritance and development of traditional methods and exploration of new methods; both ways to prevent contradictions and measures to adjust contradictions; both the way to lead people to properly handle contradictions and recommendations on uniting people to promote the development.
