After World War II, the European capitalist society has entered into the period ofrapid economic and technological development. At the latter half of the twentiethcentury, the worldwide ecological crisis has begun to emerge. Under this circumstance,the Western academic circles have started to find solutions from the Marxism classics.Ecological Marxism opposes the excessively rapid economic and technologydevelopment and the utmost profits pursuit, and develops and grows fromeco-centrism and relevant experience in green and environmental protection activities.The development of the European ecological Marxism visions comes from thecontent framework and research methods of some Frankfurt School criticismphilosophies, at the same time, it largely uses discussions about ecological inMarxism for reference and integrates theoretical research results of the Europeanecology sociology. It has been formed in the1970s, developed and enriched in the1980s and1990s, complying with the development trend of the times.Using the original background of European ecological Marxism development asa starting point, this article starts with criticism theories of two theoretical foundations-Marxism and Frankfurt School, to analyze the origin of development of theEuropean ecological Marxism. In the second part, it expands the explanations andrelated evaluations of the basic theories of the European ecological Marxism, andsummarizes the positive significance of ecological Marxism induction and itscorrelated limitations to the Western capitalist societies. In the third part, it conductsan in-depth study on contemporary European ecological Marxism developmentvisions, focusing on "political ecology" by Andre Gorz, French ecological Marxist,and postmodernism criticism by David Harvey, the famous British space geographer.It sums up solutions from these actual studies to the ecological crisis, consumptionalienation and other social issues in the contemporary European capitalism. We believe that rebuild the reasonable development patterns of ecologicalcivilization can really solve the European capitalism ecological crisis. One way is toradically set up the socialist social system. Development framework of eco-socialismmaybe bring with new development opportunities to the European capitalist countries.Another way is to facilitate the reconciliation between man and nature, achieving withharmony and unification for human and natural world. Either way needs ecologicalMarxists to speak out the urgency for solving ecological crisis in the socialenvironment of the European capitalist, conducting reflection and criticism on theprivate ownership of the means of production to promote the values rebuilding of thepeople.
