An Analysis On Russia’s Policy Toward Taiwan After The Cold War

The Taiwan issue is the core interests of China, is also an important issue in thesecurity of the Asia-Pacific region. Starting from the early years of the Cold War,Taiwan has been a pawn of American Far-East policy to curb China. As the leader ofthe Oriental socialism, however, the Soviet Union choose to support position of thePeople’s Republic of China on this issue, letting the New China has achieved a greatinternational support on the Taiwan issue. But under the background of Cold Warbetween United States and the Soviet Union confrontation, this attitude of the SovietUnion has greatly stimulated the America, resulting in Taiwan’s status in the USgeostrategic to get improved. After the Cold War, there was a great change made inthe international system. Although Russia is the main successor of the Soviet Union,we saw the adjustments about the diplomatic strategy and the Asia Pacific policymany times, what’s more the policy toward Taiwan have had different features indifferent periods. In this paper,I analyzed comprehensively the evolution, currentsituation and trends of Russia toward Taiwan policy after the Cold War and putforward some ideas.There include five chapters: the first mainly discussed the evolution of Russianpolicy toward Taiwan in the context of the international system transformation; thesecond chapter focuses on the current situation of the relationship between the Russiaand Taiwan in political, economic and culture, which summarizes the policycharacteristics; in the third chapter, proposal the problems in the Russia’s policytoward Taiwan; the fourth chapter analyzes four aspects containing Russia domesticpolitics factors, the Asia-Pacific factors, the United States factors, and the Chinafactors, demonstrating the potential disturbance variables during the adjustment ofRussian policy toward Taiwan; the fifth chapter is mainly about several impact on thesecurity in the Far East, China-Russia relationship and the Asia-Pacific regionalstability due to the Russian policy towards Taiwan, and ended with the analysis of itsfuture trend.
