Research Of Intergovernmental Organizations Based On Social Network

Nowadays Intergovernmental Organizations(IGOs) play more and more important roles in international community, which affects the process of world peace and development. At present, China is facing increasingly complex trade friction, energy security, territorial disputes and other international issues. Thereby IGOs should be extensively understood to alleviate these issues. In order to avoid unnecessary conflicts even military conflicts, China should deal with the benefit of IGOs resource. In this thesis, we analyze the nature of IGOs and the relationship with wars based on the perspective of social networks.Firstly, we build a social network model of IGOs based on the relevant concepts of social network as well as construction methods of social network. The resultant model includes affiliation matrix of IGOs, social network graph and social relation matrix within countries.We further investigate the nature of IGOs network using social network analysis method. In order to understand node importance of IGOs network, a novel evaluation method was proposed based on comprehensive node weights, which apply the concepts of traditional degree centrality and closeness centrality methods, and considers the impact of node weight and adjacent node weight with a redefined node weight, maximum edge weight and adjacent node weight. In addition, experiments were deployed to demonstrate the applicable capability of the method to assess the node importance in IGOs network. With comprehensive node weight method, we further evaluate the significance of IGOs network during different time period. Through comparing the change level of node importance for countries in different period, we found that the importance of nations in IGOs network is closely related to the geographical location, social system, comprehensive national power and the level of development.Furthermore, In order to understand structure characteristic,we employed cohesive subgroups and social position of the network to investigate community discovery method in IGOs network. Cohesive subgroups method can find communities in the network, and social position analysis can explore hidden hierarchical structure.Lastly, we also discussed the relationship between IGOs and wars. Specifically, wars are divided into world wars and local wars. We built social network models of IGOs both before and after a war. Then we assess node importance of IGOs as well as the change before and after wars using comprehensive node weight method. Additionally, we analyze IGOs network using community discovery method, and find cohesive subgroups of the two sides as well as the difference of social position between the two sides both before and after the war. In the end, we summarize characteristics of IGOs network before and after wars in two types with the relationship between IGOs and wars.
