For thousands of years, human beings have never stopped thinking over time. Marx’s concept of time was the production of the development of the history, which was an inevitable result as the human cognitive ability reaching a certain level. Marx scientifically revealed the existence and law of development of social time in his historical materialism horizon. The first part of this paper consists of three typical concepts of time in the history of western philosophy, including Aristotle’s objectified concept of time, Kant’s subjectivity concept of time and Hegel’s view of the time of the unity of subject and object. All of these are the cornerstone of Marx’s concept of time.The formation of Marx’s concept of time was not achieved overnight, and it was a process of constantly changing, development and improvement. This paper’s study of Marx’s concept of time mainly includes two parts: Marx’s early view of time and his matured concept of time. Generally speaking, Marx’s concept of time refers to his matured concept of time from the perspective of the materialist conception of history. The second part of this article makes a brief analysis of Marx’s early time, mainly including the view of time in doctoral dissertation and the time in the "economic and philosophical manuscripts of 1844". The third part is the most important part of this paper, which analyses the essence, characteristics and philosophy value of Marx’s concept of time.Marx’s concept of time was based on the human beings and their productive practice. It was essentially a social concept of time which was refined and improved during the process of productive practice. Free labor sublated the alienated labor and physical labor through the creativeness and the destructiveness of the productive practice, thus the free time was increased and the necessary labor time was reduced, and promoted the development of the society and the human.Marx’s concept of time has achieved the dialectical unity of time and practice, the dialectical unification of time and history and the dialectical unity of time and the society. It possesses obvious practicality, historic and social characteristics. With regard to the value of philosophy, Marx’s concept of time is highly scientific and humanism, which plays an important role in the academic society and reality. On the one hand, the study of Marx’s concept of time helps us to understand Marx’s historical materialism and grasp the essence of historical materialism, and then learn to use the perspective of critical history to research questions; On the other hand, the study contributes to the understanding of Marx’s concept of time and helps people grasping the social time and its law of development, thus promoting the individual’s free and all-round development.
