The visually impaired children in the welfare is a special group, which belongs to both the category of the orphans and that of the handicapped children. Their physical defects and complex background of life might have doubled the mental damage to them, and make their mental health status much more worrying:inferiority, withdrawn, sensitive, fragile, and lack of a sense of security or trust..., all of which are harmful for their growth. Therefore, the involvement of social work is very necessary. However, according to our research on the literature, it is found that there is very little research about the visually impaired children in the welfare, and it is most like because the traditional way of social work intervention is much difficult to work. As the psychological defense mechanism is a basic factor of mental health, and its maturity also and the degree of cognitive distortion is inversely proportional. Thus, this research hopes to combine psychology theory and method with social work to explore a new method of intervention, to better improve the mental health of visually impaired children in the welfare. In this thesis, qualitative analysis methods and quantitative analysis were unified for the research of the visually impaired children in N children’s welfare home to understand their living conditions, and to provide them with social work intervention services. This study, for the first time, applied the cognitive behavioral therapy to the social work intervention, and made psychological defense mechanism as the mediating mechanism. That is, by correcting the irrational cognitive of the clients, the social worker could improve or even correct their immature psychological defense mechanisms, and finally enhance their mental health. Considering the particularity of the clients, the social worker combined the traditional cognitive therapy with the social work intervention, and the process of the intervention was in accordance with the social work service flow. At the same time, in order to make the evaluation results more persuasive, this study assessed the effect of the intervention through both aspects of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Our results shew that:the intervention services had achieved a great result; and the cognitive behavior therapy could be very effective to improve the mental health of the visually impaired children in the welfare, and correct their unreasonable cognitive and behavioral problems. This thesis consists of five parts:Part Ⅰ:The first part of the thesis is introduction. Firstly, the background of the research is introduced. Secondly, the thesis introduces the issue and the objects of this research. Finally, the thesis introduces the target and the meanings.Part Ⅱ:The second part is the literature review of related internal and broad researches. First, the thesis concludes and expounds some related researches on mental health of visually impaired children in the welfare. Secondly, some related researches on psychological defense mechanism of visually impaired children in the welfare are combed. Finally, the thesis collates some researches on both theory and practice of the cognitive behavior therapy. By summing up the research above, we find that:mental health status of visually impaired children in the welfare is not optimistic, thus the intervention of social worker seems very necessary. However, recent theoretical and empirical research on the on them is much few, whose reason might due to the sense of unsafe that makes the development of their psychological defense mechanism not mature. Thus, traditional way of social work intervention seems difficult to be effective, and the cognitive behavior therapy that could effectively correct the personal cognitive distortions becomes a relatively ideal choice.Part Ⅲ:The third part is the introduction of the methods of this research and the reasons for using them.In this study, the data were collected through quantitative and qualitative methods, and the cases were intervened by cognitive behavioral therapy.PartⅣ:The fourth part is overall work of social work intervention for visually impaired children in the welfare with the mode of cognitive behavior therapy, and mainly introduces specific intervention process of the cases. According to traditional general process of social work, the intervention is divided into six parts:receiving, prediction, planning, intervention, evaluation and ending, and each stage has different priorities. In the first three stages, social worker needs to establish a professional service relationship with the client, collect as much information about the clients as possible, and determine the basic targets of the intervention and the problems to be solved, which could be help when making a general plan for the following intervention. In the stage of intervention, social worker employed some theory and method in traditional cognitive therapy to correct the core misconception by testing the surface error concept, so that the unreasonable cognition could be corrected, and the maturity of psychological defense mechanisms could be improved to a certain degree. Besides, through cognitive review and consolidation of achievements of early intervention, the social worker could improve the social support system for the clients, and better help the clients improve their level of mental health. In the end, the effect of social work intervention in mental health of the visually impaired children in the welfare is evaluated from both qualitative and quantitative aspects, and the results show that cognitive behavioral therapy combined with social work could achieve great results in the intervention in mental health of the visually impaired children in the welfare.Part V:The fifth part is the summary and reflection.
