Objective: To examine the changes and relationships of salivary immunoglobulin A(sIgA) and testosterone or cortisol in players during incremental exercise, and to furtherexplore the relationship between stress hormone and mucosal immunosupression. Methods: Fifteen male players(Age:20.8±1.6ys; Stature:177.4±4.9cm;Weight:72.5±9.8kg; Body fat percentage:12.1%±5.6%; Training period:4.7±1.3ys) inShenyang Sport University volunteered to participate. Saliva samples were collected atbefore-exercise (BE), exercise20minutes (E20), exercise40minutes (E40), after-exercise (AE)and after-exercise30minutes (AE30) during the exercise period. Salivary sIgA, testosterone, and cortisol were measured to evaluate relationships between immune and stress parameters.Results:(1) There was no significant changes in sIgA concentration during exercise (P>0.05);There was significant changes in sIgA secretion rate during exercise, and sIgA secretion rateat AE was lower than BE significantly (P<0.05).(2) There were no significant changes in testosterone and cortisol concentration duringexercise (P>0.05); Testosterone and cortisol secretion rate at AE were lower than BEsignificantly (P<0.05).(3) Salivary sIgA concentration was positively correlated with testosteroneconcentration(r=0.417,P<0.01)during exercise, however R2was lower(R2=0.174);SalivarysIgA secretion rate was positively correlated with testosterone secretion ratesignificantly(r=0.913,P<0.01),and R2was higher(R2=0.833); Regression equation:salivarysIgA secretion rate=0.386+3.604×salivary testosterone secretion rate.(4) There was no significant relationship between sIgA and cortisol concentration duringexercise(P>0.05).Salivary sIgA secretion rate was positively correlated with cortisol secretionrate significantly(r=0.949,P<0.01),and R2was higher(R2=0.900);Regression equation:salivary sIgA secretion rate=0.175+1.023×salivary cortisol secretion rate.Conclusions:(1) Mucosal immunity of the participants were suppressed during incremental exercise.(2) To indicate a possible role of stress hormones in the exercise-inducedimmunosuppression.
