The reception aesthetics theory is a new literature reading guiding theory formed afterthe former Soviet Union’s and western view that regarding teachers and teaching materialas the center, which has been widely used in senior high school Chinese reading teaching,English translation and college English reading teaching in recent years. Receptionaesthetics theory reveals the new relationship between the works and readers, establishesthe readers’ main body status in reading activity, puts forward that there are a lot of blanksor unfixed points in a work before readers’ reading, and has discovered that there is acertain aesthetic distance between the readers’ expectations and the work. These views ofthe reception aesthetics theory are consistent with the requirements to the senior highschool English reading teaching which was raised by Ordinary Senior High School NewCurriculum Standard (2003): teaching should take student-centeredness, pay attention to thecultivation of students’ cognitive ability, imagination and creativity and reform from thediversity of the width and the depth of teaching content and teaching methods.Therefore, based on the theory of reception aesthetics, taking existing reading theoriesand methods as resources, this study makes an empirical study on senior high schoolEnglish reading teaching and reception aesthetics theory to put forward a kind of seniorhigh school English reading teaching model based on the reception aesthetics theory. Thismodel needs to adhere to four principles: student-oriented, equal, creative and cooperativereading principle. What is more, this model needs to complete three steps: preparationbefore class, organization of classroom teaching and activities after class.The subjects of this research are109students in two classes of Grade One fromGuiyang No.6Middle School; the study design is a four months’ experiment on senior highschool English reading teaching; the research steps include the tests before the experiment,the implementation of the teaching model, the tests after the experiment and the analysisand discussion of the results. The experimental results show that senior high school Englishreading teaching model based on reception aesthetics theory can help to improve theefficiency of senior high school English reading teaching and strengthen students’ English reading ability.
