Select the high school mathematic textbooks published by McDougal Littell company inAmerica and PEP-A in China respectively than make a comparison from the perspective of thedesign of examples and exercises. Exploring the characteristics and similarities and differencesbetween the two. Firstly, make an overall comparison and analysis of two editions of high schoolmathematics textbook from three aspects which are structure of the textbook, organization of thecontent and design of knowledge points of chapters. It is concluded that (a) ML version textbookprovides students with more learning resources.(2) ML version textbook divides knowledgehierarchy into small parts, then organize the parts which are closely related together. The PEPversion textbook assemble contents related then organize them together.(3) The amount ofknowledge points in chosen content of two versions are approximate, but number of knowledgepoints of each section in ML version textbook are more stable.Establish a frame dimension to make statistical analysis of examples and exercises. Thendiscuss the relationship between examples and exercises in the two versions, making in-depthqualitative analysis of examples and exercises in the ML edition textbook at the same time, themain conclusions are as follows:Design features of examples and exercises in two version of high school mathematicstextbooks: ML versions emphasis on the elementary of the examples and exercises. Attaches greatimportance to the integrity of the examples and exercises; Examples plays a main role in theprogress of the interpretation of new knowledge. Example is helpful to student learning; Theexercises’ constitution is modular and has diversiform function. Examples and exercises in PEPtextbook are more refined; Examples plays a subordination role in the progress of the interpretationof new knowledge; Solutions of examples are open; The exercises are administrative. The similarities of the design of examples and exercises in two version of high schoolmathematics textbook are as follows. First of all, the context of three selected content changesimilarly. Secondly, the problems are becoming more and more synthetically from in-class exercises to post-class problems and at last to exercises which are located at the end of the chapter. The differences of the design of examples and exercises in two version of high school mathematicstextbook are as follows.(a)The former has a more stable statistical results of different indexes ofthree selected contents.(b) Structure of examples and exercises of the former is shown as oneexample with several exercise and that of the latter is shown several examples with severalexercises.(c) The former has more examples and the examples are more elementary as the latterhas few examples and the examples are more comprehensive.(d) Examples of the formeremphasize the steps of solutions as well as provide help, The latter press on the analysis of thoughtsand the summary of method.(e) Examples of the former are mainly used to show the applying oftheories and principles. For the latter the examples are used to display skills and methods, theprogress of modeling besides the application of theories and principles and these three are allimportant.(f)Problems of the former with effective context have a larger proportion, the situation isnewness and interesting and changing with the Times and always close to the students. The latterhas more pure mathematics problems, The situation of problems often connect to other disciplines.(g)Both versions’ examples are reflected the use of information technology, but tools of the formerare more practical and popular.(h) The consistency of problems of two versions are different. Theformer has more exercises which are used to consolidate. While the latter has more exercises whichare developed and variant.Through analyzing the design features of the examples and exercises in two versions of highschool mathematics textbooks, and the comparison of similarities and differences, combined withthe existing principles used for designing examples and exercises I come up with six piece ofadvices. Firstly, pay attention to the integrity of the problem sets.Secondly, promoting the assistantprovided by the examples to students’ learning. Thirdly, The exercises should in different levels.Fourthly, the examples should represented with more symbols and charts. Fifthly, select newmaterial which is closely related to the students.Sixthly, Given fairness when applying informationtechnology in the process of solving problem sets.
