Objective:The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of Compound E-Jiao Syrup on theantioxidant abilities of Taekwondo athletes, by analyzing the changes of serum antioxidantindex after taking the syrup, which is to provide a theoretical basis for the validity, security andrationality of Compound E-Jiao Syrup used for anti-fatigue in Taekwondo.Methods:Fifty Taekwondo athletes (second-class or beyond) from athletics sports school affiliated toShenyang Sport University are selected as subjects (male:25subjects and female:25subjects).This is a double-blind experiment in which all subjects are divided into3groups: the controlgroup (placebo,1bottle/time,3times/day); the experimental group (Compound E-Jiao Syrup,1bottle/time,3times/day); and the high-dose group (Compound E-Jiao Syrup,2bottles/time,3times/day). Under the same training plans, each group took Compound E-Jiao Syrup accordingto their own prescription for4weeks, during which the serum antioxidant indexes of subjectswere tested before the experiment, after2weeks of experiment, and after4weeks of experiment,respectively.The indexes included catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malonaldehyde (MDA),carbonyl, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), testing hemoglobin (HB), and the maximumoxygen uptake (VO max). This study used Bonferroni correction method to perform multiplecomparisons, by SPSS17.0.Results:1. Time effect of taking Compound E-Jiao SyrupAthletes’ MDA in the control group significantly decreased(P <0.01)after2weeks and4weeks. Athletes’ CAT and SOD in the experimental group significantly increased (P <0.01)while MDA and carbonyl markedly decreased (P <0.01)it can be suggested that the effect ofCompound E-Jiao Syrup on the antioxidant abilities has time effect. For male athletes, after2weeks, SOD in the experimental group significantly increased(P<0.01)while MDA significantly decreased (P <0.01). MDA in the high-dose groupsignificantly decreased (P <0.01) after2weeks. But after4weeks, its CAT increased (P<0.05)and MDA decreased (P <0.01).Athletes’ HB and VO2max was rising, but there was nostatistical significance.For female athletes, CAT in the experimental group increased (P <0.05)while MDAdecreased (P <0.01)after2weeks; After4weeks, both CAT and SOD of athletes in theexperimental group increased (P <0.01/0.05) while MDA decreased (P <0.01). Its MDAin the high-dose group decreased (P <0.01)after2weeks, After4weeks, both MDA andcarbonyl of athletes in the high-dose group increased (P <0.05)Compared to the date after2weeks, For female athletes’ VO2max in the experimentalgroup increased (P <0.01).Its MDA in the high-dose group decreased (P <0.01)while HBand VO2max increased (P <0.01)after2weeks. But after4weeks, its MDA and carbonyldecreased (P <0.05)while HB and VO2max increase(P <0.05) at the same time;Comparedto the date after2weeks, its MDA and carbonyl in the high-dose group decreased (P <0.05)while HB increased (P <0.05)after4weeks. Both MDA and carbonyl of athletes in the experimental group and thehigh-dose group significantly decreased (P <0.01) while T-AOC in the experimental groupsignificantly increased (P <0.05).For male athletes,athletes’MDA in the high-dose groupsignificantly decreased (P <0.01). For female athletes,in the experimental group HB increased(P <0.01); in the high-dose group MDAand carbonyl decreased(P<0.05)while HB increased(P<0.05). Therefore, we can presume that the effect of Compound E-Jiao Syrup on theantioxidant capacity doesn’t have dose effect.Conclusions: 1. Compound E-Jiao Syrup can increase the content of SOD and CAT.2. Compound E-Jiao Syrup can prevent free radical from damaging unsaturated fatty acidand protein.3. Compound E-Jiao Syrup can increase the content of hemoglobin and the maximumoxygen uptake of athletes and improve their oxygen carrying capacity and aerobic endurance. Ithas the function of anti-fatigue.
