The basic concept of the English Curriculum Standards of Compulsory Education isthat “working for all students, paying attention to quality education and focusing on thefull development of the students”. But unfortunately, due to different reasons, there arelarge amount of English low achievers in the junior high schools in rural areas.In order tofind out the causes of the phenomenon, and seek some solutions as well, LiteratureResearch Method, Questionnaire Method and Experimental Method have been adopted inthis thesis. The author designed a questionnaire which was based on the thesis the authorhad read. After analyzing the answers of the questionnaire carefully, the author found outthe following causes existing in the students who had learning difficulties in English.First, in the families, parents went out to work and left them at home so little attentionwas paid to their children. In lack of love and care, students easily gave up when they metdifficulties in English learning; next, the learning atmosphere was not strong enough intheir school. The teachers’ teaching methods were out of date, the teachers felt too boredand tired to care for the students, therefore, the trouble that students met in Englishlearning can not be found and solved in time and students lost confidence in Englishlearning gradually; Then the teaching material was not close to the real life in rural areasand it seemed too difficult for them so the students felt they could not understand theteaching material and finally they gave up listening in English class; Finally, the studentsthemselves have not formed good habits of study and they were in lack of effectivelearning strategies, such as not listening attentively in class, not making notes and nothaving the habits of previewing and reviewing etc.In order to transform the English lowachievers effectively, then the author did experiments in two classes (Class Five andClass Four in Grade Eight in Gubei Junior High School, Xinfeng County, JiangxiProvince with several countermeasures that the author came up with. First, the authorfound out that teachers can transform the students with learning difficulties in Englishfrom the emotional education, enhance the self-confidence and willpower of the students;Second, teachers should study deeply and make some changes in teaching materials andarrange teaching contents reasonably to reduce the difficulty of the teaching materials andenhance the students’ confidence and achievements in English learning; Third, teachers need to teach the students some learning strategies, such as previewing before class andreviewing after class and making notes in class and so on. In the author’s opinion, thestudy has great significance. First, the study can provide certain scientific theoreticalbasis for other teachers who are doing or going to do the relative studies in rural areasand next it can improve the English teachers’ English teaching; finally, it can change thecondition of some English low achievers and help them improve their Englishperformance.
