English teaching research has been focused from teaching process to learning process.The main objective of the New English Curriculum Standards for senior high school is todevelop students’general language skills, not only the ability of getting and processinginformation but also the ability of analyzing and solving problems. Besides, it also paysattention to the development of students’ oral English.Under such circumstance, the traditional grammar-focused teaching method hasbecome out-of-date and improper. Teaching methods emphasizing on classroomteacher-student interaction, have been carried out for English teaching in China. Effectiveteacher-student interaction in the class can not only help create more opportunities for thestudents to communicate with teachers and peers in English, but also stimulate students’interest in learning English and give them more motivation to work harder for the language.This study aims to make an investigation into the current English classroomteacher-student verbal interaction in No.16Middle School of Zhengzhou, Henan province,and try to discover the major problems existing in English classroom teacher-student verbalinteraction in order to find out the effective solutions.This thesis aims to answer the following questions.1. What are the major problems in teacher-student verbal interaction in senior highschool English classroom?2. What are the causes of the problems and effective solutions?Observation and Interview are two methodologies used in this study. The results of theinvestigation show that at present, a large number of students get accustomed to passivelylistening to the teacher and seldom interacting with the teacher, which surely results inineffective learning. On this basis, at the end of the study, effective solutions are given tochange and improve the situation of senior high school English classroom teacher-studentverbal interaction.
