Biology is an experiment-based discipline. The teaching of biology experiment plays an essential role in the instruction of this discipline and is also the main approach of achieving the goal of biology instruction as well as the major method of improving the initiative spirit and scientific attainment of middle school students. The New Curriculum Standard of2003for middle schools emphasizes four course ideologies:improve scientific attainment of biology; initiate investigative study; gear the needs to all the students and pay attention to the relation of the courses to real life. This standard pushes the teaching of biology experiment to an unprecedented high level.In order to make a know of the present condition of course arrangement of biology experiment in Chaoshan district, Guang Dong Province, the author of this paper used the methodology of questionnaire and statistic date to make analysis and proposed correspondent countermeasures. The author surveyed the condition of course arrangement of biology experiment (teachers and students) in25middle schools and27high schools to all majors in year2008of biological science in Hanshan Normal College, Guang Dong Province, who go to those middle schools for intership in October,10th,2011.Firstly, the author made a survey about the condition of the opening of each experiment course and the reason why some experiment courses cannot be opened, all the experiments being from biology textbooks (compulsory1,2,3) in senior high school and Grade7(volume1and2) and Grade8(volume1and2)in junior high school by PEP.Next, the author designed questionnaires for teachers in middle schools. The author made an investigation on fourteen problems such as biology experiments funds, supply of laboratories and supply of experiments instrument and equipment and found that because middle schools in Chaoshan district, Guang Dong Province have different locations, types and levels, there exist great discrepancies in the above-mentioned problems.Firstly, there are great discrepancies between the present teaching conditions of middle school biology experiment and the New Curriculum Standard. In most schools, students are just instructed or allowed to observe the experiments but not allowed to do experiments by themselves.Secondly, teachers who teach middle school biology lack experiment skills. They are not familiar with the concept and skills of molecular biology, colon technology, stem cells and ecological engineering and so on.Thirdly, confronted with the pressure of college entrance examination, some schools fail to put emphasis on experiment courses. Some schools don’t have laboratories and some seldom open experiment courses even though they have laboratories.The author of this paper finds the problems and their reasons through the above survey and puts forward correspondent reformation strategies. Firstly, a necessary recognition of experiment teaching should be stressed. Secondly, conditions of experiments should be improved to enhance biological experiment teaching. Thirdly, various approaches should be applied to advance teachers’ overall quality. Fourthly, more assessments should be carried out to give advice to relative educational and administrative departments, schools and teachers. These can make a great difference to the opening and reformation of middle school biology courses in the future.
