English is a language which is widely used in the communication ofintenrational economy,technology, information, etc. The most important skill ofEnglish is communication.Textbook is an important material of educational input.The content of text basically reflects the culture of the government and socialpoints. English textbook is a core teaching material of curriculum. Elementaryschool English textbook is the most important resources and tools for teachers toteach and students to learn.According to the communication competence,themecan provide the students good materials for communication while the types ofexpression can provide the students good forms of communicationJn this case,thetextbook must have multiply themes and types.The thesis selects and uses the two major English materials in elementaryschool in Shanghai. And I select New Century version English textbook andOxford version English textbook in Shanghai of Grade3and4, In this study,theauthor uses all kinds of methods,including literature study,comparative researchand so on,on the theoretical basis and meaning of communicative competence,acomprehensive analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the two versionsof English textbooks.From the analysis,we can gain many inspirations abouttextbook design. This thesis can be divided into three parts:First of all,the researcher rebacks relevant researches about communicativecompetence,theme design and type design at home and abroad.In this case,theresearcher determine the purpose,meanings,contents,methods and innovations ofthis study,intend to clarify the key issues to be resolved and to establish aframework for this study.lt is a preparation for the following investigation.Secondly,the researcher compares and analyses the themes and types of thetwo versions of English textbooks. The English textbooks are combined with a lotof discourses,which are the examples.The themes of discourses provide thecircumstances of communication and the contents of students’communication. While the types of expression provide the types of students"communication.Thirdly,Quantitative and qualitative research will be combined.With the communication competence,the reacher studies the theme and type design ofShanghai elementary school English language textbooks.Finally, based on the above findings, the researcher gets some inspirations ofthe type and theme design of the English textbook.By the way,the researcheranalyses the factors which contribute to the functioning of Shanghai elementaryschool English textbooks,which helps writers have a better understanding of theEnglish curriculum standards and elementary school language textbook design.On the basis of the above,we can see, the Oxford version of Shanghaielementary school English textbooks has a distribution of a wider range of themesand types,which can be more effective for communicative competence. I hopethat the study of the theme design of Shanghai elementary school languagetextbooks does good to the textbooks’ writers, teachers at the forefront ofteaching and parents in textbook selecting and usage.
