Shanghai Experimental School ("SES" in short), as the first school oriented by its educational experiments, has a ten-year flexible schooling system. SES, from the overall reform of its educational system, always pursues to encourage every child to better transform their potential into practical ability. Based on this, SES conducts experimental studies from several aspects, such as schooling system, textbooks, courses, and teachers’ professional development, along with the teaching idea of "developing students’ potential and respecting their personality" it promoted. SES builds up three types of educational programs-core courses, elective courses and special needs courses, among which core courses are for national basic curriculum and elective courses and special needs courses are the special programs in SES. All the courses are designed to meet students’ needs. The three types of educational programs are carried out at the same time as a whole, so that the school can find out and develop the infinite strengths of each student and help students realize the goals for their potential development with joint efforts.Under the overall curriculum structure of the school and as the supplement of the teaching materials for History subject set by the national and Shanghai government, teachers of History subject have designed and implemented school-based courses for History subject after continuous efforts and exploration, so as to meet the needs of students in accumulating historical knowledge at maximum. The school-based courses mainly consist of the "elective courses" to meet the needs for elective students and the tailored "special needs courses" for students’ personality needs. Those well-established mature elective courses include:the Activities and Methods to Uncover the Historical Truth behind the Fog,STS "Love the Ancient Culture of China"-Series Courses for Museums, etc..The author, through the practice and exploration at daily teaching activities, tries to interpret the general procedure for the development of school-based courses. The emphasis lies in how school-based courses can closely meet students’ needs. And the author also tries to make some suggestions after the reflections on the problems occurred during the development and implementation of school-based courses. It’s expected that this research can better improve the work in SES in the next stage and can be helpful for the development and implementation of school-based courses in other schools. In this paper, some simple analysis and thinking are made for the development and implementation of school-based courses for History subject with the method of questionnaire and action research.
