As one of the five aspects of teaching, homework plays an important role inEnglish learning in Junior Middle School. Under the impetus of curriculum reform,classroom teaching techniques have changed greatly in a positive way. But the designof homework has changed so little as it has become the weakest link in the teachingof English. Therefore, it is necessity to explore the theory and practice of designingEnglish homework for junior middle school students so as to improve the quality ofhomework and to arouse the students’ interests and eventually enhance their Englishlanguage learning.Through literature review, questionnaire and case analysis, this study focuses onthe principles of designing English homework for junior middle school students..The paper is composed of six chapters. Chapter one introduces the researchbackground, illustrates and analyzes the status of English homework in public juniormiddle schools in Shanghai and then states the purpose and significance of the study.Chapter two presents a brief review of the researches on homework design at homeand abroad and a comprehensive summary of existing research outcomes. Chapterthree explains methodologies of the research. Chapter four and five are the mainparts of the paper, in which, the analysis of the questionnaires and interviews as wellas the elaboration of the principles are given. Chapter six summarizes the wholepaper, followed by some suggestions for the design of English homework and for theneeds of further research work to be done.
