This thesis is a case study based on cognitive psychological theories and their applied practice in Hua Xia Chinese School in New York of the United States, in which the author proposes an Integrated Perceptive Approach to teach children Chinese characters. The purpose of the thesis is not only to cultivate children’s attitude towards Chinese character learning but also to bring to Chinese teachers an awareness of children’s perception while learning. Fundamentally, a collaborative effort between the student and their desire to learn coupled with the teacher’s ability to impart his/her own ability to awaken multiple receptor channels of a pupil dictates success with retention of learning material. When teaching children Chinese characters, it is imperative that we are familiar with cognitive psychology. Cognitive psychology is deeply involved with how people learn through perception where it is focused on people’s conscious and psychological process. A process of which takes into account a teacher teaching a language together with the student’s learning activities, especially those activities that deal with feelings, senses, memory, expression, imagination, thoughts and emotions at that moment which are inseparable. In our daily activities, we receive stimulants through our ears (audio45%), speech (verbal30%), sight (16%) and writing (9%). In order to improve our learning efficiency, we should maximize the use of our senses that focus on hearing, vision, and movement. Using the Integrated Perceptive Approach provides all the advantages that no other methods offer. The Integrated Perceptive Approach is based on maximizing the stimulation of children’s various receptors when learning Chinese characters that are awakened through the application of hearing, vision, movement, smell and tasting techniques.Based on the above description, the author discusses the Integrated Perceptive Approach in a several chapters. This thesis begins with an introduction, followed by main content consisting of3chapters and concludes with a summary. The introduction mainly describes how the topic was chosen, explores the academic value as well as related results from previous research including the viewpoints, theories and purposes of this research. In order to better understand Hua Xia Chinese School in New York, the author introduces the background of the children of Hua Xia Chinese School in New York in Chapter1. The author details the children’s background and the necessity of using this particular approach in the school. This approach is the main focus of the thesis. The Integrated Perceptive Approach is based on the biological, psychological traits to perceive and retain material while learning Chinese characters by using hearing, vision, movement, smell and taste. Chapter2describes the Integrated Perceptive Approach, its principals as well as how it works. Using different content of the lesson in the textbook in the teaching, maximizing these5senses to carry out the learning process. According to different lessons, emphasis using perception in the classroom is matched to the nature of children activities. Teaching is conducted through perception activities by verbal expression, singing, drawing, performing and playing. Therefore, children acquire knowledge in a joyful environment. Chapter2also describes several essential principles-quantity, quality, from easy to difficult in an orderly process as well as how to transfer children from passive to active learning, stimulate the intellectual, improve the learning potential and build up learning confidence. The author provides a teaching case to illustrate steps to carry out using the Integrated Perceptive Approach. Chapter3described the tests that were conducted in Hua Xia Chinese school. The third chapter analyzes the purposes, means and results of this experience that word tested in Hua Xia Chinese school. The results are positive and encouraging. The test results proved Integrated Perceptive Approach to be effective and feasible. The author also provides some thoughts, observations and suggestions based on the results in the final summary. The author expects that the findings of the thesis will benefit the improvement of Chinese language teaching as well as cultural recognition.
