| In order to promote understanding and communication between ethnic students in theborder minority area and students in inland China, our school began to take on minoritysenior high students from Xinjiang area in2005, as a measure to speed up the cultivationof talents there, and as a result to accelerate the development of education in that area. However, a lot of problems have emerged in English teaching and learning at the sametime, due to students’ varying English levels. To them, English is a third language. Mostsenior high students from remote minority agricultural and pastoral areas there have neverlearned English, while students from urban areas in Xinjiang have already learned somebasic English skills. When they are put together in the same class, polarization becomesserious in their English learning, which leads to the decline in their learning enthusiasmconsequently. In order to close the gap as well as to improve the English learningenvironment, the implementation of multi-level teaching in English classes seemsespecially important. The thesis firstly introduces the related theories and also states briefly the currentresearch status concerning multi-level teaching and learning at home and abroad, so as tolay a theoretical foundation for the study. Then, through the analysis of teachers’ differenttreatment of students, teaching objectives, class organization, students’ assignments andevaluation system, the thesis tries to put forward some practical measures as well as thescope of their application. Based on the comparative analysis of statistics data andquestionnaires, the thesis concludes that multi-level teaching suits measures to individual circumstances, and thus arouses, to the full extent, students’ enthusiasm in classroomparticipation. It improves the efficiency of English teaching, narrows the polarization inEnglish learning and therefore, brings about satisfactory teaching effects. Finally, the thesisargues that it’s necessary and feasible to apply multi-level teaching in inland XinjiangEnglish classes. Besides, it points out the difficulty of its implementation and providessome corresponding solution strategies. This study undoubtedly supplies some referenceinformation for the further exploration of this practice. |
