The geographical curriculum of high school involves a combination of required and optional courses. Because of the effect of College Entrance Examination and Geography proficiency assessment test, the required courses are the main part in teaching and the optional coursesare seldom attached importance to the students, which will separate the aspects of geographical teaching in required courses and optional courses. With the development of the advanced education, geographical teachings do have a focus on improving the students’ ability. As a result,the importance of the optional courses is increasingly emerging; what’s more, it has been an important part of geography’s subject of senior high school. To handling the problems efficiently on convergence of the required courses and optional courses will make great difference on teaching activities for the teachers and students.The essay mainly contains four parts. The first part, It mainly illustrates the backgroundmeaning, some related concept, present situation and research ideas of the subject, and thenanalyses the theory basis and teaching practice. The second part, based on the questionnaire ofthe connection between optional course and compulsory course, the essay analyses its presentsituation of the teaching. The third part, it mainly states some strategies in optional course andcompulsory course of geography in senior high school. First, it analyses the relationship andlanguage points of optional course and compulsory course, and then illustrates some strategiesin teaching effectively in detail. It also shows some approaches to implement in the teachingof optional course and compulsory course by demonstration and then makes some teachingdesigns. The fourth part, the essay makes a conclusion about the research and the existingproblems, and then prospects the related research.The conclusion of this study, we should correctly understand the connectionbetween elective curriculum and compulsory curriculum. Optional course and compulsorycourse have equally important curriculum value, in elective curriculum and teaching highschool geography compulsory aspect of convergence countermeasures, penetrationcompulsory elective courses in teaching process to elective courses as an entry point todeepen compulsory curriculum. Seizing the required courses and elective courses in theconvergence point of knowledge, students can improve their geographic thinking. Payattention to social practice, the concept of harmony between man and the environment wouldbe formed.
