With the wide promotion of the new curriculum reform throughout China, the education pattern andcultivating emphasis have also changed, paying more attention to cultivating pupils’ practical ability andinnovation spirit. The previous education pattern and method were obviously insufficient. The role of theteachers in class has transferred from initiators and speakers into promoters, researchers and collaborators,developing the dominant role of the pupils. At present, the traditional music education in primary schoolslacks the artistic expressional form of "music" itself, usually taking the single teaching of music knowledgeand skills as the training objective. Teachers take the teaching materials as the core, limiting the musiceducation within a narrow range. The true purpose of music education has been lost. Such single andold-fashioned teaching pattern makes the music classes in primary schools lose color. In addition, the pupilshave difficulties in the perception of music. As a result, music classes have become the burden of pupils,obliterating the pupils’ imagination, creativity, and soul of feeling music.As to the present status of the music curriculum activities, the principle of hobbies and interests shouldbe followed, and pupils can feel and experience music by themselves. This paper discusses how to make agood job of music curriculum activities in schools, how to increase the enthusiasm of pupils, how toenhance the aesthetic consciousness of pupils under the system of the new curriculum reform. Through thefirsthand experience, the pupils can obtain emotional resonance, psychological satisfaction and spiritualdevelopment. This paper investigates the problems and the insufficiency of the music education in primaryschools in Xinxiang by questionnaire survey. Firstly, this paper begins from the investigation of the currentsituation of music extracurricular activities in primary schools in Xinxiang, so as to know about the basicinformation of pupils’ extracurricular activities, the developing conditions of music curriculum activities,the organizational forms and types of music extracurricular activities, school leaders’ and teachers’ attitudes,and parents’ support degree. Based upon the above factors, this paper presents the prospect andcountermeasures of the current music extracurricular activities.
