Hunan No.1 Provincial Middle School is a renowned middle school boasts long history. Established in the First Year of the Republic of China Period(1912), it has experienced hundred years of vicissitudes. Thanks to its glorious tradition of patriotism, remarkable education achievement as well as audacious reform spirit, No.1 Provincial Middle School has left its impressive mark in the history of Hunan middle school education during the Republic of China Period. Inspired by its outstanding position in middle school education of Hunan, and based on the background of middle school education of Hunan during the Republic of China Period, this paper studies music education of No.1 Provincial Middle School and digs into its meaning for middle school music education at that time.The author conducts a survey of music course arrangement, textbooks, teachers and extracurricular music activities regarding music education of No.1 Provincial Middle School and summarizes its characteristics after making reference to school journal, document and material, school history as well as other contemporary studies on related personages and school history, thus contributing new literature and study result regarding history of music education of Hunan Province.The paper consists of three parts as introduction, main body and conclusion. The introduction summarizes existing study result and probes into the significance, content and method of study. The main body has three chapters. The first chapter introduces the general development situation of Hunan middle school education during the Republic of China Period, outlines the overall historical background and briefly describes school running situation. The second chapter surveys music education situation of No.1 Provincial Middle School during the Republic of China Period from four aspects, namely, music course arrangement standard, extracurricular music activities, music teachers and students as well as the characteristics of music education. The third chapter analyzes music education contribution made by the school in terms of times and education, probing into its significance in music education activities to the contemporary music education and music course arrangement. The conclusion praises moral education of the school and its contribution to modernization of music education in Hunan Province.
